Cloth or disposable diapers?

We do not have a strong opinion. Studies indicate that their impact on the environment is similar (detergents in the water to wash cloth diapers vs. disposables in a landfill). Diaper rashes are slightly more common for babies in cloth diapers, but some babies react to disposable diapers, as well.

Diaper rash

Any rash that appears in an area covered by a diaper is called a diaper rash, but the causes can vary. Most diaper rashes are caused by acid in the stool and urine that burns your baby’s sensitive skin. Prevent these rashes by using diaper cream at every diaper change. Some diaper rashes are caused by infection with yeast or bacteria. Yeast rashes usually look quite red and have tiny dots of red around the main part of the rash. Any over-the-counter antifungal cream applied three times a day will quickly eliminate yeast diaper rash. Bacterial rashes are angry red, may have pimples or pustules, and require antibiotic ointment, such as Polysporin three times a day. Call us if your baby’s diaper rash does not seem to be going away with treatment.
